There are eight basic elements and two magic category groups. Magic is considered to be either offensive or defensive. Offensive spells affect your enemies while defensive spells will aid your allies. Examples of offensive spells include Flame (Flame deals fire magic damage) and Delude (Delude causes confusion). Examples of defensive spells include Heal (Heal restores an ally’s HP) and Guard (Guard increases an ally’s defense).
The elements make up the building blocks of all life in Vetra. The eight basic elements are: water, fire, earth, wind, electricity, ice, light, and dark. Electricity and ice are combinations of the other four elements, but magic-users found that some could use ice and not water, and electricity without fire or wind. As a result the magic-users classify electricity and ice in separate categories.
Each element has a weakness and strength against another element. Opposing elements are naturally against each other in nature, and will do twice the amount of damage to one another during combat magic. Consequently, characters of an element will receive half the damage if an enemy cast magic of the same element of the character. So if Flame was used on a creature whose main element was fire, the creature would only take half the damage.
The opposing elements are:
Water - Fire
Earth - Wind
Electricty - Ice
Light - Dark
So if a character used water magic against a fire opponent, the opponent would take double damage. But if fire magic was cast on a water enemy, the water enemy would also take double damage. If earth magic hit a creature whose element was earth, then the creature would only receive half the normal damage.
It should be noted that water, fire, earth, and wind are the four primary elements, and thefore the most common among Vetra. Electricity and ice are a bit rarer, but it isn't unusual for a creature to use them. Light is farely rare, and probably won't be seen in early levels. Dark is a very rare element, and seldom used.
There is also another element that isn't considered a basic element. This element is called Time, and it is a subelement because it depends on the combination of other elements. Should you, in a rare event, come across a Time Mage, you are very, very lucky indeed. Time Mages may start out weak, but their power progresses. However, time does not have a strength, but it doesn't have a weakness either! Bear this in mind if you find someone who can use time magic.
Some creatures may be non-elemental; that is, they do not possess an element. They have no strength or weakness against others.
Understanding magic can immediately raise you from a beginning player to an intermidiate one. Always remember magic's strengths and weakness, and it will serve you well!
